Fix windows built in defragmenter




















In the elevated command prompt, you can perform an analysis for a specific volume. This command will analyze the fragmentation status of your C drive on the hard disk. Your next best thing to Bolton Wanderers FC. Martin B. Diskeeper is actually a really good product. It is so much faster than the built-in, it does a more complete job and it defrags automatically. The new version Diskeeper has a new interface and is really easy to use. I don't see why any of you would feel the need to uninstall it, that was your first mistake. The built-in sucks especially the one in Vista! I agree with Bill. FYI- Diskeeper created the original Windows built-in. Its an expansion on the original.

Well done John! I did follow instructions about type in command prompt but still the same.. I type in the search box , in the run box I have tried all of the above and I still can't get mine to work. I have tryed ALL of that and it still does not work!! I get no error messages when I try to defrag or analyze. The only other software I have installed that has a defrag is System Mechanic 6 Professional.

I have used the defrag on it before for small things or singal file defrags. But for all intensive purposes I use windows defragmenter.

However, my other computer, desktop has the exact same O. XP, SP2 and the same version of system mechanic, and the windows defragmenter on it works fine.

And I have used the system mechanic defragmenter on it more than this computer! The desktop has no issues but like others, on my laptop, I open windwos defragmenter, I can click analayze and defragment all I want, nothing happens.

The buttons donot grey or anything its just like I diden't even click them. I have found nothing of the sort on either of my computers. So don't give me that as a fix! If it's not working, first Click on Start, Run, and enter regsvr32 atl.

I tried to have Windows show all hidden files and no go.

It must be a phantom file or hidden in System32 file. I noticed most of the files under INF folder ends with. Why is that? Then, I tried to use John's method and it worked. I just downloaded and ran some hard drive cleanup programs to make my computer run faster again. I think doing this might have caused the defrag to deactivate due to System Managed Size turned off without warning.

The when I would run Disk Optimization - there euphonimizm for defrag - all hard disk drives would be returned as "unavailable". Hi all, Great thread, missing just one more aspect I came up against the following message when I tried to run contig. There is a Delf Trojan quite common know that replaces beep.

It is used as a loader for other companion files as rootkit entries. Both Combofix and SDFix can identify if this is the case, and replace the file.

I just hope this post gets bumped to the top like John B did, because it took a lot of reading to get this far down the page. David P. Keep up the good work people! David P has resolved my issue. I have kav is installed and noticed after an update my internet connection was sometimes slow and would not load pages. I now have winxp and perfect disk 8 defrag working perfectly plus my internet connection works fine. Tried everything, then downloaded Malwarebytes as suggested. All works fine now. I have Windows XP. I tried the following steps outlined in this post: regsvr32 command from the dos prompt, install dfrg. The defragmenter did not work. And then I downloaded the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from download. It found several infected files.

The defragmenter worked after removing the infected files. Thanks to all the contributors. Worked great!! If you are running some third-party applications like Antivirus software in the background, the apps may interfere with Disk Defragmenter. Right-click the Taskbar at the bottom of your computer screen and select Task Manager from the context menu.

Under the Process tab, right-click the third-party software and select End task. Then repeat this step to end all running third-party software. As mentioned above, corrupt systems files can cause Windows 10 defrag not working. To fix this issue, you can try performing an SFC scan to repair it. Type cmd in the search box on the taskbar, and then right-click the Command Prompt app and select Run as administrator. This process may take you much time to scan, please wait patiently. Once this repairing process completes, you can relaunch Disk Defragmenter and see if it can work properly.
